Types of Laser Hair Removal
When it comes to laser hair removal there are a number of different types available. They are all based on the way the light is absorbed by the hair, killing the follicle, though different lasers may be used in different situations. As well as laser hair removal options at the salon, there are also laser hair removal kits incorporating this modern technology.
Here is a quick guide to the different lasers used in hair removal treatment:
The Diode Laser – This is one of the newest lasers available. It uses diode materials to form the laser beam and there are six variants of this laser currently being used. The wavelength of the diode laser is around 800-810, and higher wavelengths make these kind of lasers more suitable for treating those with darker skin.
The YAG Laser – This has a very high wavelength of 1060 with a high repetition rate which can produce good results. However, this high wavelength has led to irritation of some skin tones.
The Ruby Laser – These lasers are more suitable for those who have a very light skin tone. This is because the laser does not need to be at such a high wavelength to be effective. This is one of the most painless lasers available and popular for removing small amounts hair.
The Alexandrite Laser – This is a popular laser for removing larger amounts of hair. It can penetrate deep into the skin cells and operates at the wavelength of 755. However, a disadvantage of this kind of laser that it can cause black spots in the targeted area and is not as effective at removing the hair as other lasers, such as the diode.
There are a number of factors that may influence the choice of laser used in any given treatment:
Skin Colour – If you have darker skin then your technician may use a different laser, such as the Diode laser, to improve results, though the process will generally be slower.
Hair Colour – Red or blonde hair is harder to treat, and your physician may need to use a more powerful laser. This can increase the risk of pain and redness.
Home Laser Hair Removal
There are now a number of laser hair removal machines that have been specially adapted for personal use at home. Most of these machines will come with detailed instructions on how to use them and perform your own laser hair removal treatments. However, it is recommended that trained professionals take on the task of removing hair in order to minimise potential risks.
There are many brands of home laser hair removal kits available including Timepeel and Vector. They can all bring about permanent results, though many also work by simply making the hair grow back thinner than before.
These machines are generally a lot less expensive than going to a salon to do the job. However, if you want the very best results possible with minimal risk, then the extra cost is often well worth it to visit a salon.
